Modern Mellow

Some homes are designed around trends. Others are designed around the person who will one day walk through the front door.

Modern Mellow was created for a 62-year-old client who had spent much of his life in the United States but had always dreamed of owning a home in India. This wasn't intended to be a permanent residence. It was a place he could return to during work visits - a home that felt welcoming, familiar, and unmistakably his, rather than another hotel room. From the very beginning, the project was built on trust. The client clearly communicated how he wanted to live and then entrusted us with shaping the design, material palette, and overall experience of the home.

The apartment already offered generous natural light and well-proportioned spaces, making it an ideal canvas for thoughtful design. Rather than introducing unnecessary complexity, the focus was on creating a home that felt effortless to live in. Every decision was guided by simplicity, comfort, and longevity - qualities that quietly improve daily life without demanding attention.

Warm teak became the defining material throughout the home. Beyond its timeless appeal, it introduced a sense of warmth and Indian identity that intentionally contrasted with the client's life overseas. Every room was given its own colour palette and personality, yet the consistent use of teak veneer ensured the home remained visually connected, allowing individuality and cohesion to exist side by side. This balance between distinct spaces and a unified home became one of the project's defining ideas.

Curves appear throughout, from the bespoke study area to architectural details that soften the transition between spaces. They were introduced not simply as a stylistic gesture, but to improve movement, create visual flow, and eliminate harsh edges - an approach that also made the home more comfortable for its owner. The study, seamlessly connected to the dining and living spaces through curved forms, remains one of the defining moments of the project, reflecting how work, leisure, and everyday living can coexist naturally.

Technology quietly supports the experience rather than becoming the focus. Smart home automation allows the client to monitor and control the house even while in the United States, while motion-sensor lighting in the bathrooms enhances comfort during late-night use. These are not features added for novelty - they are thoughtful interventions that make the home easier to live in, whether the client is in Hyderabad or halfway across the world.

Modern Mellow is ultimately a home about identity. It reflects the life of a man who has lived across continents without losing sight of where he belongs. Rather than recreating the home he left behind or imitating the life he built abroad, the design embraces warmth, familiarity, and quiet confidence -creating a place that feels unmistakably Indian, unmistakably personal, and ready to welcome him back whenever he returns.
